The perfect place to spend a summer evening. Some people turn it into a stage, pretending lots of things... as if the music was there, the audience was there... You can watch lots of things... the people, the waves of the Hudson river, the big city by night... contemplate the history of Wigstock (which happened on another pier nearby), Greenwich Village, Christopher Street...

Don't expect to be overwhelmed by Memphis as a city. It may seem that it sucks.

But then, it may change. Coming down South Main Street, approaching the area where Jim Jarmush filmed 'Mystery Train', the scenery changes, and it's on. However, looking closer, you realise, it's already progressed towards gentrification. Change again, it sucks again. Next, you may enter Memphis Train Station through what seems a side entrance. That's the place to be - a flashback to the 1960s, green neon signs in the station hall, solid wooden benches and not a soul in sight. Change again, it's on.

If you come to Memphis, you have to have dinner at the 5 Spot, opposite the train station building. Ah, wishing it was that clear cut. It may have been the best restaurant in the world on a Thursday evening in November 2009, with Adrian putting on music sounding like the 1940s and doing the cooking and serving all by himself. But everything about the place may change, and then it sucks... again.
